Pennsylvania is the nation's largest importer of waste.

In 2005, Pennsylvania imported 7,931,984 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) (In addition to MSW, Pennsylvania received 1.7 million tons of other solid waste from out of state in 2005.) Most of this waste came from New Jersey and New York.

In 2002, the GROWS North Landfill in Morrisville Pennsylvania accepted 2,622 tons of waste from New York City, while the Tullytown Landfill in Tullytown accepted 2,122 tons.

Casella received a 7 million dollar grant to upgrade rail facilities at its McKean Landfill where it currently accepts 5000 tons of waste per day by rail and 1000 tons of waste per day by truck.
